Chapters 1-3

Odd One Out, chapter 1
"Ahhh!" A strangled scream coursed around the quiet forest. Instantly a large and
muscular ninetales leapt out of the bushes and ran to the source of the sound.
"It's A-a-a d-d-demon!" stuttered another shaken ninetales as she
stumbled out of her den.
"What!?" the male ninetales skidded to a stop. "Demon? How?"
"It-it-it's black!"
"Black? That's not possible! That can't be right!" He ran into the burrow
He stopped short at the sight of the black vulpix. It was licking its paws. It
looked up.
"Hi daddy."
The father gasped. It was newborn already speaking audibly. He backed
out with wide eyes.
"It spoke," said the father in a shocked voice, "It's too young to speak. It is
a demon."
"We can't keep her," voiced the mother, "She's too smart, she's spoken
too early, and she's black."
"You're right. As much as I would hate to leave even a demon defenseless
in the woods, we have no choice. She may be a danger to us.
The young vulpix sauntered out of the den.
"I'm hungry Mother."
The two adults took a step back.
The vulpix eyed up a passing Caterpie, and in a matter of seconds the
poor bug was literally burnt to a crisp.
She grinned and took her prize to a nearby bush.
"We have to leave," whispered the father, "Now."
"I agree," was the frightened mother's reply. "she's too smart, too strong,
and too strange. She could hurt us without even realizing it. She's a demon."
With a quick burst of Agility they disappeared from sight.
The young vulpix sighed. She knew what had happened. She was
abandoned.
She rose from her spot and began to follow her parents scent trail. She
could smell their fear.
She tracked the scent until she reached a river. That's were the scent
ended.
Vulpix gasped quietly. Her instincts told her that water wasn't good.
She sat to think.
Mother said I was too smart. What is that supposed to mean? She said I
was too strong. I guess not many newborn can toast bugs to a crisp. And Demon.
What does that mean? something bad I guess. I was abandoned because of it.
Well, I know I'm young, but I need to take care of myself now.
Vulpix rose and squared her shoulders. She wasn't hungry, so she decided
to find a place to spend the night. It was dark now, and getting chilly. She walked
to a nearby tree and promptly fell asleep.

Odd One Out Chapter 2
The vulpix woke with the sun barely rising. The sky was a purplish hue and it took
her breath away.
My first sunrise! It this was my dream had a sunrise in it? My dream
bothered me. What did that darkness mean? It was frightening, It felt like it
wanted me for evil purposes. But then there was that shining light, it seemed nice
and comforting. It seemed to smother the darkness in kindness. What does this
mean? I'm so confused!
Vulpix wasn't sure what to do, she had no home, and had to fend for
herself. She was frightened, but not so helpless. She decided that finding food
would be a good idea.
As Vulpix crept through the bushes, she heard some other voices. At first
all she could hear was, "Human, hu, hu-man, man!" but after a few second the
voices became clear.
"-Yeah, word has it there are some pretty strong pokémon around here."
"Really?" came another voice.
"Yep. Here, let's turn this thing on."
"What is it?"
"A pokémon tracking device. It's supposed to home in on strong pokémon,
It can tell the strong from the weak."
"But what about your pokémon you have? They're pretty strong, and you
have 44 different kinds."
“I know, but they’re not strong enough for the pokémon league. Look, I
already put my pokémon’s stats into this, and it will find any pokémon stronger
than my own.”
“Whatever.”
Vulpix was nervous as she began to slowly creep away. She hoped that
she wasn’t as strong as the boy’s pokémon. She wasn’t sure what the pokémon
league was, but she didn’t like the way he was talking about it.
“Whoa!!”
Vulpix stopped.
“What?”
“I’m getting something!” shouted the boy, “It’s nearby, and moving fast! It’s
small, but strong. Very strong!”
Vulpix ran faster.
“Go! Rapidash!”
Vulpix could hear something large running in her direction. It was slowly
gaining on her. My legs are too small!
“Raha-ha-ha!” that was the Rapidash.
No!
Vulpix thought she was going to die. She didn’t know anything about
pokémon training.
Vulpix didn’t want to die running. She ran into a clearing and turned to face
her attacker.
“I am not going to die running!” she shouted as the boy ran into the area
on Rapidash’s back.
The Rapidash looked at her, “die? You’re not going to die!”
“Then why are you chasing me?!” cried Vulpix in anguished tones.
“My master wants to catch you!”
“Catch me? But -” She was cut off by the boy.
“Go! Wartortle!” he threw a red and white ball infront of Vulpix. A glowing
red light emerged and turned into a wartortle.
“War!Tor!Tle!”
“Uh?!” Vulpix didn’t understand. Then she did.
“”You’re mine!” the Wartortle shouted.
The Rapidash stood back to watch.
”Wartortle! Watergun!” Wartortle took a deep breath and sprayed a
narrow stream of water at Vulpix. Her heart almost stopped as she dodged out of
the way. Wartortle's eyes widened when he realized he had missed.
“Tackle attack!” Wartortle took a step back and ran towards his foe. He
leapt up into the air and popped into his shell. He rocketed at Vulpix but missed.
He was furious when he landed.
"Wartortle, you're a crappy excuse for a pokémon, HIT IT!"
Wartortle lowered his head menacingly. He charged at Vulpix. She
stepped aside at the last moment, and he sailed past her at alarmingly fast
speeds. His chin skidded across the dirt and his body soon followed. He stood up
slowly and turned to face Vulpix. He was covered in dirt.
He began to make another charge. He shot at her with his bald head
glistening in the sunlight.
Vulpix threw up a strong barrier just before he would have hit.
Wartortle hit the barrier with a loud bang. He slid to the ground, dazed.
Vulpix jumped backwards as he lurched to his feet.
“I don’t want to fight!” Roared Vulpix, as a single tear-drop rolled down her
cobalt cheeks.
“You don’t have a choice!” Leered Wartortle, as he shook off his daze and
dirt, “you have to fight!”
“But I don’t want to hurt anybody!”
“That’s your only hope for escaping!” snorted Rapidash. Her flames grew
larger as she anticipated the outcome of the battle.
“But-” she was cut off by Wartortle’s attack.
“I-” Vulpix Growled and used a powerful flame-thrower. Wartortle had
Withdrew into his shell before the flame hit.
The shell rocketed towards the boy and knocked him off his feet. The shell
bounced as it hit the ground.
“Wartortle?” asked the boy, “are you okay?”
“Warrr....”
“No! Wartortle! Return!” He turned to his friend, "He’s hurt really bad! We
have to get him to the pokémon center right away! Or else he might not make it!”
“I’m sorry! I said I didn’t want to fight!” bawled Vulpix.
“You’re nothing but a demon.” Glared Rapidash just as she returned to her
pokéball.
“I! I didn’t mean to!” Vulpix choked and ran as fast as she could away from
the boy.
“I’ll be back!” the boy shouted after her, “I’ll be back to make you pay for
what you did to my Wartortle!”
Vulpix shivered at the coldness of his words as she ran.

Odd One Out chapter 3
Vulpix ran until she couldn't run any longer. Then she walked until she couldn't
walk any more. She was thirsty and hungry, but she couldn't find the energy to
hunt. She just collapsed in the shade of a weeping willow. Vulpix fell asleep.
She woke to the sound of howling.
"Grooooowlithe! Grow, groooowlithe!"
Vulpix tried to get up, but her legs were too week to hold her.
The growlithe stopped howling, and turned to face her, "relax, I won't hurt
you, I'm here to help."
Vulpix realized that she didn't have much of a choice, so she let herself
sprawl on the ground.
"Here, eat this," the growlithe placed a pidgey infront of her.
Vulpix looked deep into the mysterious growlithe's eyes, and couldn't see
any hate, or fear, just friendliness, and kindness. She decided to trust him, for
now.
As Vulpix dug into the the pidgey, The growlithe told her his story.
"I am an orphan, When I was a pup, My mother was caught by a pokémon
trainer. Because of this, my father died of a broken heart. Thus I was orphaned.
For a few weeks I had to fend for myself, Then I met an orphaned cyndaquil. She
and I banded together, searching for other orphans to rescue. Now we have
about twenty orphans in our group." He looked at Vulpix,
"My name's Joey, But my friends call me Flame." He winked, "That's what you
can call me."
"I'm done," said Vulpix. She got to her feet with renewed strength. "Thank
you Flame."
" Hey no problemo sweetcheeks," He started to walk away, " come on, I'll
take you to meet the others."
The cave that Flame took her to was extremely large, Vulpix was amazed
at the size. Flame looked at her astonished face and said, " We have an
orphaned Diglett." vulpix was puzzled, she knew very little types of pokémon.
"How old are you?" asked Flame.
"Just a few days," she replied cautiously
"WHAT!?" he took a step back, and growled, "That's impossible, babies
aren't supposed to be able to talk until a few months old!"
"I know, " she replied, as she sat down, "maybe now you should listen to
my story."
Flame sat down a few feet away, " I guess I should."
" It all started when I was born...." She began.
* * *
" Wow!" replied Flame when Vulpix had finished her story, " I can't believe
you were able to beat a wartortle, that'd be hard even for an Arcanine!" When he
saw Vulpix's face he laughed, " I guess you don't know many different pokémon,
do you?"
"No"
"C'mon, I'll introduce you to the others." He turned to lead the way. He
stopped, "By the way, what's your name?"
"It's," Vulpix looked thoughtful, "Well, I don't really have one!"
"Well then, we'll just have to think up a gone one, then don't we?"
"Like what?"
"Mmm... okay, you have black fur, so how about something that is related
to black?"
"Okay, like what?"
"Ummm... Blackie, no, we already have one of those, Mmm...Oh! how
'bout ~Ebony~"
Vulpix laughed
"What you don't like it!?" he looked hurt
"No, I laughed at the way you said it."
"But do you like it?"
"It's great, I love it."
"Cool, let's go," He winked, "Ebony."
